Do Snakes Sweat? How Reptiles Regulate Body Temperature

Snakes, unlike humans and many other mammals, do not sweat. The familiar sensation of perspiration is a cooling mechanism unique to animals that possess sweat glands, which reptiles, including snakes, simply do not have. This fundamental difference in physiology means that snakes must employ entirely different strategies to manage their body temperature, especially when faced with environmental heat. As ectothermic animals, often colloquially referred to as "cold-blooded," snakes rely entirely on external sources of heat to regulate their internal temperature. Their relatively slow metabolism also means they produce less internal heat, further emphasizing their reliance on external thermal regulation.

The behavioral strategies snakes use for thermoregulation are critical for their survival. A snake's daily activity patterns, such as when it hunts or rests, are heavily influenced by temperature. During extreme heat, many snakes become nocturnal or crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) to avoid the scorching midday sun. In cooler climates, they may be more active during the day.
